Android phone WiFi problem

Recently I got an android phone from PickEgg. This phone is great with all the TV WiFi, especially the 3.5" capacitive screen is really awesome. I really like it but there's one tiny problem, sometimes WiFi just disconnect, and I can connect it again after 1 or 2 minutes. But it's really a little annoying. So, have anyone have the same problem, and how do you fix it? Thanks in advance.

Reply 1 : Android phone WiFi problem

For example your open and WEP (protected?) networks can lose connection for far too many reasons. Also we know that handheld WiFi antennas and range are reduced. Yet folk will continue to think they should be as good as a laptop on WiFi.

Let's hear more about that router and settings.

Best phone for PDA usage, texting but NO data plan

Hi, Looking to purchase a phone for voice, texting and calendering, but have no interest in paying for a data plan. We are currently verizon customers but out of contract. AT&T and Verizon are probably the best network in our area (Southern NH), but would be open to others if phone matched needs and network is good. Would be for 3 lines.

Thanks for any advice you could throw my way....

Reply 1 : Best phone for PDA usage, texting but NO data plan

Doesn't matter if you use At&t or Verizon, a PDA device will require a data plan.

Reply 2 : Best phone for PDA usage, texting but NO data plan

While you cannot avoid the mandatory data plan with Verizon, you *can* still technically avoid it w/ ATT. How? Well, for starters you cannot upgrade through 'official' channels, nor can you upgrade to an ATT branded smartphone. It has to be unbranded and unlocked. IOW, discount sources for ATT handsets such as Wal Mart, Letstalk and Best Buy are no go since they generally only carry ATT branded phones (besides those of other carriers). They might have a few unlocked ones, but they still may have the carrier software are show up in the IMEI lists that may flag accounts. Luckily though, Amazon & Newegg do carry a number of unlocked, non-ATT branded smartphones that can be used by simply inserting a current active ATT SIM. The most important part is- don't use or activate a new SIM, as this may flag a user account as well.

Unlocked, unbranded smartphones w/ wifi I would recommend. Both also have the correct 3G bands for better voice quality/use in the U.S.-

I'm wondering if Pepe7's loophole is still open in 2011. An employee at the AT&T store I talked to a few months ago said the system sweeps through all the phones every night to look for smart phones and automatically signs up to a data plan any that don't have one.

Does the phone's being unbranded (still) prevent the AT&T system from picking up that it's a smart phone? Can't the system tell what kind of phone is on the network?

AT&T Forcing Data Plans on Unlocked and Unbranded Smartphones? (Updated)25 Comments

Written by Humberto Saabedra on February 11, 2010
AT&T
Update: AT&T
has responded, stating that the policy of forcing smartphone data plans
regardless of subsidy has been in effect since the last major change in
plan alignment last September, despite no explicit mention in the Terms
and Conditions about the policy in regards to unlocked smart devices
being used on the carrier. AT&T further justifies its position by
stating that the policy is fair as smart device users consume more data
on average and the unlimited data plan protects them from overages.AT&T
has begun notifying customers that have purchased unbranded and
unlocked smart devices used on its network without what the carrier
considers an "appropriate data plan" that it is now adding smartphone
data plans for those devices automatically, despite not being subsidized
by the carrier. The prevailing wisdom by purchasing an unlocked
and unbranded device for use on AT&T is that the customer has the
freedom to choose what service plan to sign up for. With the letter,
posted after the read more link, AT&T is asserting control over
customers that have not received a handset subsidy or purchased branded
equipment by forcing more expensive data plans on its customers
automatically without an explanation, potentially exposing the carrier
to litigation.

Dear Valued Customer,We hope you are
enjoying your Smartphone! We appreciate and value your business and want
to be sure you are aware of a change we've made to your account to
ensure you have the best possible experience with unlimited data usage
in the United States.Smartphones are made for data
consumption-surfing the web, social networking, email and more. That's
why we require a Smartphone data plan in conjunction with our
Smartphones. This ensures that customers with data intensive devices are
not unpleasantly surprised with high data pay-per-use charges-just one
low, predictable, flat rate for unlimited use each month. For
whatever reason, our records indicate your Smartphone does not have the
correct data plan. As a courtesy, we've added the minimum Smartphone
data plan for you.If you would like to select another data plan
or have questions, please call 1-800-331-0500 (or 611 from your wireless
phone) or visit att.com/smartphoneplans.Thank you for being an AT&T customer. We look forward to continuing to provide you with a great Smartphone experience.Sincerely, AT&T

Hence, my advice still holds true today.

Reply 6 : Best phone for PDA usage, texting but NO data plan

Thanks for your reply, Pepe7.

Which ones does it care about? Which ones does it not care about? And how long will these phones fall "below radar"?

I'd prefer not to part with a couple hundred dollars for a phone only to discover that it does what I bought it for for a few months before AT&T changes policy... or even not at all.

Reply 7 : Best phone for PDA usage, texting but NO data plan

The iPhone, Nexus (S?) and a few other similar Android variants to the Nexus currently will usually get flagged by ATT's system, along with any ATT branded smartphone they currently offer or have carried in the past. AFAIK all non-ATT branded Nokia smartphones are still OK.

There's simply no way to tell when you will get hit or when they will necessarily update their policy at some future date.

Reply 8 : Best phone for PDA usage, texting but NO data plan

The Treo 700P doens't require the Data package.
I use mine all the time with Verizon.
I only pay for Voice and the 5dollars for text.

Reply 9 : Best phone for PDA usage, texting but NO data plan

I've actually had a Blackberry Bold without the data plan. I'm not sure if you can still do this at all, but I've actually canceled my data plan after I had purchased the phone.

I got a 2 year contract with the data plan because they usually require it for all smart phones. I waited about a month and called At&t and told them I wanted to cancel the data plan and they just did it for me.

Reply 10 : Best phone for PDA usage, texting but NO data plan

They still require it for all ATT branded smartphones acquired past a certain date, which does include the Bold. Some of us have older grandfathered smartphones though (mine's from a 2007 upgrade). I am frankly surprised that an ATT CSR was even allowed to do this via the computer on their end. Don't be surprised if you receive some sort of alert that you need to (re) add a data plan of at least $15/month. It happens. <shrug>

If you only rooted then that would not be your issue, are you running any custom roms?

do you have issues with any other media, audio, or video not being supported?

Reply 3 : Android 2.2 (Rooted) HTC Incredible Live Stream

Verykool R80

Has anyone tested the new Verykool R80 cell phone, or know where there is information on this phone being actually tested? It's categorized as a rugged phone that is waterproof, however based on the specs, it's not as rugged as some phones available. Nevertheless, I like it's features but do not want to be disappointed. Can anyone refer me to a site with updated information?

Reply 1 : Verykool R80

I can't find their street address on the web site. It's in San Diego which is close to me but why didn't they list that on their site?

Most likely something to hide.

Looking to replace my LG Ally

I cheaped out when I re-uped my verizon plan at the end of last 2010 and end up with the LG Ally. My first smartphone, I appreciate all it can do, but a few things about it drive me crazy:

* It's slow. Almost anyone around me with another phone can launch their browsers and pull up a web page faster. The camera also takes forever to snap a picture and the quality of the photos is poor.

* It never linked well to my MSN email or Facebook accounts and I actually access both via the browser, not the apps, which I find useless. This could be an issue with android more than the phone itself, particularly as it relates to MSN.

* The screen is very imprecise. There seems to be a combination of my own clumsiness, the screen's imprecision and other quirks in the phone that I never quite know who it is going to call or what's it going to do!

* The call quality sucks. I don't lose calls. I just can't hear people very clearly.

* I do like the big beefy keyboard and am not too concerned about size, but after playing with a few other phones that only have touch screens, I am now convinced I can do with out a separate keyboard. I also like the calendar feature, which I have liked to a gmail account instead of MSN. Seems to work well

* Bottom line for me is browser and web page load speeds along with call quality, then camera quality, and I want it all to be as bug free and integrated as possible.

So, given all this, I am looking for advice on how to proceed. My thought is to buy something like Droid X or HTC Incredible on Ebay and just swap out my phone. I'd love to be able to consider something like the iPhone or HTC Thunderbolt (although my area does not yet have 4G), but since I highly doubt I would qualify for a new plan at this point and I am also fairly poor, these seem likely to be well beyond my reach. At the same time, I do want a clear up grade or I might as well just wait it out. Thoughts?

Thanks everyone!

Individual Text Tones

Are there any smart phones which allow you to use just one tone for a favourtie person/wife, which is for texts AND calls?
One tone one person.
I'm sure my old Motorola Rzor used to let me do this

ID3 Tags

Hi. I recently purchased an LG BD590 Blu-Ray player with a hard drive, and generally I like it but I'm frustrated by the unit's inability to recognize ID3 tags on the MP3 files I copied to the hard drive. The vast majority of my music collection is a disorganized blob on the hard drive, which I can only search by filename, which is pretty much useless if I wanted to hear a whole album.

I understand the unit works better with CDs ripped directly to the hard drive rather than MP3s copied over, but I'm not terribly interested in re-ripping all my CDs. Can anyone suggest some sort of program that can do a mass conversion of MP3 files to change the ID3 tags into notations that the BD 590 will understand?

Question: Blackberry Curve as a Wi-Fi router/hot spot?

I currently use a Blackberry Curve i8350 on Sprint/NEXTEL as well as an iPod Touch and iPad (wi-fi only version). I subscribe to a data plan and wanted to know if there is any way to use my Blackberry as a wi-fi hot-spot without paying additional monthly data usage fees.

Could I tether my iPad to my Blackberry via wi-fi, via bluetooth? Even if I had to use some type of cable...? I am also open to purchasing some type of Mi-Fi router if I have to. But again, I'm not interested in an additional data plan.

Thanks in advance for your help, ideas, suggestions, etc.

Reply 1 : Question: Blackberry Curve as a Wi-Fi router/hot spot?

My brother does this over bluetooth to his laptop. This is only to confirm that it has been done without any offer to write tutorials about how. I'm sure there are tutorials out there on the internet about how to do this setup. But the wifi link may be troublesome to the point you may want to just do the tether to the laptops and forget wifi.
Bob

Reply 2 : Question: Blackberry Curve as a Wi-Fi router/hot spot?

Thank you for your reply. If I could tether from my iPod touch and my iPad to my Blackberry, that would be great. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any instructions on how to do this.

If anyone out there knows where I could find out how to do this, please advise.

Reply 3 : Question: Blackberry Curve as a Wi-Fi router/hot spot?

But I will not write about it or offer any support since it involves using ICS. ICS is bad for support and mixing in the tether only complicates it further. While an expert user can get it to work the problem is that for the non-expert the issues cause the discussion to become a tar pit as the user demands you explain everything or write a step by step. I'll write that all this is written up out there. But I find some claim it's not. What they really meant is they didn't understand the instructions.
Bob

Reply 4 : Question: Blackberry Curve as a Wi-Fi router/hot spot?

I bought an app called tether on blackberry.com for $50. You connect via usb cable. I originally had some difficulty with a poor cable. I bought a high quality cable and it works great. I camp out in the country and it even works there. The speed is not as fast as wifi but the convenience is great.

Reply 5 : Question: Blackberry Curve as a Wi-Fi router/hot spot?

Just ran across your near year old post. I found the blackberry app you were referring to. But, can you provide more info on the cable? I'm assuming you need a cable that goes from a IPAD/IPhone Dock connection to a micro usb - is that right? Is there such a thing? Once you have the iPad and blackberry connected, how do you get the Ipad to utilize this connection for internet access? What needs to be set up on the iPad settings?

Whats the best backberry

I currently have the iphone 3g and i do not want to upgrade to the 3GS i want a good blackberry and been thinking about the curve8900 but are they comeing out with a new bold 2 or what else is a good blackberry?

Reply 1 : Whats the best backberry

Since you have used an iPhone 3G before, you may be familiar with the fast download speed on a 3G smartphone. If you are going to choose the Curve 8900 bear in mind that it is 2G only. So the download speed is much slower than the iPhone 3G.

The successor to the Bold 9000 is Onyx 9020 which will be released some time between September and November. If you prefer a touchscreen model. The Storm 2 is expected to be out in September.

Reply 2 : Whats the best backberry

"So the download speed is much slower than the iPhone 3G"

it's definitely slower, but not that much slower. the 8900 has more channels then the previous phones for higher download speed over 2G than previous models.

Reply 3 : Whats the best backberry

My blackberry has this slick dark colour; so eye-catching. I simply love it, plus the qwerty keyboard makes it easy to navigate. I'm planning on upgrading to 3G next week

Need some advice for ending my contract, & what next? ...

Guys,

This weekend I may try to end my Sprint contract early by raising the increased fees angle. Assuming it works, what are my next options.

I would like to keep my current cell number, and wait until the next round of Android phones comes out (next few weeks?), or the next iPhone in June.

Can I just get a cheap pre-paid cell to tide me over and still keep my current cell number? How does this normally work?

Any tips/advice MUCH appreciate,

Thanks in advance!!

Chris

Reply 1 : Need some advice for ending my contract, & what next? ...

Sprint will require you to port your mobile # out to another carrier.

Reply 2 : Need some advice for ending my contract, & what next? ...

ETF=early termination fees. The carrier will penalize you for ending your conctract early, and the price can vary a little. Call Sprint to find out exactly how much this will cost. It sort of bites you in the bottom if you prorate that cost vs. the arguably more modest increases in fees over a fixed period, assuming you are well into a two year contract.

If you do determine it's cheaper for you to pay the ETF, don't port the new number anywhere until you are completely satisfied with the new carrier/service. Take a few weeks to evaluate both service and new handset/features offered by the new carrier, especially considering it will likely be a contract arrangement again. Consider the number they assign you as a temporary one. Once you are happy, *then* port over your old Sprint number. This way you won't make the mistake of immediately porting to something you do not like and losing your old valuable contact number forever.

Moving to a prepaid phone still won't get you out of paying an ETF, FWIW.

Samsung monte 5620 information message

Hello, I have a question about checking money on phone account. When I type a number for checking the credit on my phone and dial it, the message that appears with information about it lasts like 1 second and then disappears so I am not able to see anything that fast. On previous samsung phones message used to remain on the screen all the time until I went out from it (removing it alone). How can I adjust it?
Thank u in advance.
